Ticks != gridlines

We want to be able to create charts with e.g. 500-step labelled ticks with 100-step gridlines without labels.

Presumably this means

• using minor breaks, making them visible and maybe lighter or maybe not
• creating some mechanism to allow setting the number of minor breaks per major break or some such
